Raiders: Firing Del Rio is not without its risks

Raiders: Firing Del Rio is not without its risks

Chucky keeps coming back for "Child's Play" sequels, so why can't Jon Gruden return to the Oakland Raiders' sideline after almost a decade away from coaching?

The Oakland Raiders are planning on offering Jon Gruden to become the team's next head coach, according to Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

So with Gruden expected to leave the broadcast booth to return as the Oakland Raiders' coach and join Carr, here's a look back at their interaction.

With a team that was built around offensive excellence they quickly crashed out in the wildcard round, but the 12-4 season together with the feeling of unfinished business due to Carr's injury led owner Mark Davis to giving Del Rio a four-year extension in February.

Gruden coached in Oakland and Tampa Bay winning a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers in 2003.

Gruden also denied a report that Oakland offered him an ownership stake as part of its negotiations.

He now makes around $6.5 million a year as the color analyst on Monday Night Football along with recurring segments on ESPN such as "Gruden's QB Camp along with NFL Draft and some college football coverage".

"He felt he needed a change, and I told him how much I appreciated the opportunity he gave me", Del Rio said.

According to the guys at FootballScoop.com, the ownership stake might not actually happen. "He was a coach that played the game and he was a players coach, you know what I mean, so you always like those kind of coaches because they relate to you easily. I believe he could help him out tremendously and make him into the Hall of Fame type quarterback we think that young kid could be".

Ben McAdoo of the New York Giants was the only head coach fired during the season.

Asked specifically if he was a candidate, Gruden said, "Well, I think I am being considered, yes". While the timeline for Oakland's decision is unknown, the National Football League world is now fully expecting that choice to officially be Gruden.

Gruden began his head coaching career with the Raiders at 34.

It seems certain that current Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio is a dead man walking.

While getting fired and rumors of getting fired go with the territory, it's a shame that Del Rio finds himself in the middle of this. Gruden could bring stability and balance to a franchise in desperate need to get back on track with stars Derek Carr and Khalil Mack leading the way. "We wish them all the best".
