Amazon brings Alexa digital assistant along for the ride with Toyota

Alexa will debut in "select Toyota and Lexus vehicles with Toyota Entune 3.0 App Suite and Lexus Enform App Suite 2.0 in 2018", Toyota said in a statement.

At the Consumer Electronics Show yesterday, Amazon announced that Toyota will be the latest and largest automaker to integrate Alexa into its cars. Just like the home version, Toyota's Alexa implementation can also gain skills from third party developers. The Japanese brand will add the assistant to a few Toyota and Lexus models with special infotainment software this year and expand it more models in 2019. Thus, soon Cortana will co-exist with Amazon Alexa. Meanwhile, Amazon will release Alexa app in the coming weeks, and PC makers are seeking help from Intel's Smart Sound Technology to ensure hands-free access to Alexa on PCs.

But, except for the fact that they offer a Windows 10 experience, the Mac continues to be on top of the food chain and companies continue to fight against it. Asus also launched the Lyra Voice which is an Alexa powered speaker and had the capability to find network issues in your home Wifi setup.

Of course, people won't be talking about the condition of relations between Alexa and Cortana almost as much as they will be talking about voice-activated toilets.

If it seems like Amazon is putting Alexa into absolutely everything, the e-commerce giant may feel like it has to in order to remain the clear No. 1 in the virtual assistant market. Behind the scenes, the online retailer has aggressively orchestrated Alexa's rise by dramatically lowering the barrier for any company to add it to their products.
