Brian Bowen to seek reinstatement with SC

Bowen and his family were familiar with Gamecocks assistant Chuck Martin, in his first year at SC after the previous three years as assistant for the Indiana Hoosiers.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Suspended Louisville freshman Brian Bowen Jr. has signed to play with SC. He will sit out the next two semesters before hitting the court, due to NCAA transfer rules.

Ten people, including four assistant coaches and Adidas executive James Gatto, were initially charged in the investigation.

"Brian deserves a fresh start", Gamecocks coach Frank Martin said in a statement Wednesday.

"I can not speak for the NCAA but I am confident that they will be fair and will afford Brian the due process that he deserves", said Bowen's attorney, Jason Setchen, to Yahoo Sports. "Based upon the facts and application of the NCAA's Bylaws, Brian should be reinstated in my opinion". SC coach Frank Martin sees no downside in adding suspended Louisville forward Brian Bowen Jr.to the Gamecocks. Tanner said the school's compliance office will work with the governing body over the next few months to ensure Bowen's eligibility to make it to the court.

Louisville eventually banned Bowen from playing for the Cardinals and allowed him to transfer elsewhere. Bowen, who arrived in Louisville last summer and worked out with the team, was projected to be one of the Cardinals' starters and top players, a possible replacement for Donovan Mitchell. This circumstance was cited in Justice Department documents that did not mention him by name, but presented facts about the timing of his commitment that only could describe Bowen.

Earlier Wednesday, a UofL spokesman confirmed to WAVE 3 News that Bowen was no longer enrolled at UofL. The unnamed prospect then committed to Louisville on June 3, the same date Bowen ended a long, freakish recruitment with the announcement that he had chosen the Cardinals. The bribery scandal is what led to the ousting of Rick Pitino.

Bowen would certainly add a boost to the Gamecocks should he return to action.

SC made a surprise run to the Final Four past year, and is off to a 10-5 start (1-2 SEC) this season.

"Brian is an exceptional young man and a basketball player with a very high IQ for the game", Martin said.
