Ferrer, del Potro to meet in ASB Classic semifinal

But it was Del Potro who was the more clinical in taking his chances, coming through to claim a 6-4 6-4 triumph that sets up a showpiece with another Spaniard, Roberto Bautista Agut.

Ferrer, who has slipped from a career-high No 3 to 38 has a 6-4 win record over the 13th ranked del Potro who struggled to get on top of Khachanov.

He romped through the first set in 31 minutes as he broke Del Potro three times and produced numerous forehand winners.

Bautista Agut will now go on to face either compatriot David Ferrer or Argentinian star Juan Martin del Potro in Saturday afternoon's final. After almost three hours on court, the classic encounter was settled by a Bautista Agut lob that landed on the line, ending 6-7 (7/9), 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/5)."Unfortunately the match can not have two winners and I'm so happy I won", said the relieved Spaniard, who sank to his knees at the end.

"I passed really bad moments on the court and in that moment, I scream because I was very stressed", the world No.21 Bautista Agut said. "The end was unbelievable when I saw the ball in I went insane, I was so happy".

"When I had to play in the sun it was very tough for me", del Potro said. "Juan Martin is a great champion, he's very tough to beat, and I played two awesome games in the last two games of the match".

But the lanky Argentine lived up to his never-say-die attitude and rallied back in the second set, taking advantage of the only break point in the set to force a decider.

"It's never easy against David because he runs a lot and he's a fighter", del Potro said. I think the crowd enjoyed the game. "I couldn't play any better, but Roberto did well at the end of the match, and I made some mistakes". "I tried to have Juan Martin moving around the court".
