Josh McDaniels' market shrinks as Bears discover their head coach

After reports seemed to be solidifying last night that Fangio was waiting out to see if he would be able to join Pat Shurmur if he got a head coaching gig, now it seems that Fangio is ready to come back to the Windy City.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bears will hire former University of OR head coach as their new offensive coordinator. And Helfrich's head-coaching experience should assist Nagy, a first-time National Football League head coach and full-time play-caller who'll be able to lean on Helfrich's background as he acclimates to a new position.

Helfrich was a 37-16 in his four seasons leading OR, including a Rose Bowl victory and national championship appearance in January 2015.

Helfrich didn't call plays as Oregon's offensive coordinator and he won't in Chicago. The Bears hired Notre Dame's Harry Hiestand as offensive line coach.

Helfrich's arrival signals that Nagy will continue to meld Reid's West Coast scheme with spread principles, including RPOs (run-pass options) and utilizing every inch of the field, not every second on the play clock. However, he finished 4-8 in 2016 and was dismissed.

I believe UO athletic director Rob Mullens and the boosters in his inner circle should have cast a wider net before deciding to promote Helfrich - then UO offensive coordinator - to succeed Chip Kelly. They Bears were 5-11 this past season.

The Bears were the first team to strike with their head coach and were able to put together a nice staff because of it.

The Chicago Bears have agreed to a new deal with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, the team announced. It also figures to benefit running backs Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen, whose roles often lost consistency under the watch of offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains last season. The status of assistant offensive line coach Ben Wilkerson is unknown. He was an offensive assistant with the Bears from 2007-09.
