Rory McIlroy reveals heart ailment that will require monitoring

In an in-depth interview with James Corrigan from the Telegraph, McIlroy revealed he has a "bit of an irregularity with my heart", which is possibly the result of a viral infection 18 months ago.

"The rib's fine, no problems whatsoever - I had an MRI scan on my thoracic spine and all was okay", he said.

The four-time major victor revealed the heart "irregularity" in an interview with a British newspaper published on Friday.

"I've got a bit of an irregularity with my heart that I have to keep on top of", McIlroy told the Telegraph.

Health concerns aside, McIlroy sounded an extremely optimistic tone about once again establishing himself as one of the sport's top contenders, proclaiming: "Maybe before, I had to win from the front". He says he'll get an electrocardiogram every six months and an MRI once per year. "Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway", he said.

"I feel there's been a big reaction to it in the media which there really shouldn't be".

The purchaser could get a golf prize from McIlroy, however, as the soda vending machine he was given after winning the 2016 Tour Championship is featured in one of the rooms.

He did not record a tournament win in 2017, the first time that has happened since he was a second-year pro in 2008. With AP Photos.Rory McIlroy says he has a heart ailment that will have to be monitored regularly but is not expected to affect his play.

His time away to recover from the rib ailment-his last appearance was the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in early October-dropped him to 11th in the World Golf Ranking. "And I will give myself the best chances this season".

McIlroy took three months off at the end of 2017 to allow his rib to heal.
