White House welcomes China's drop in trade with North Korea previous year

Canada and the United States are co-hosting the meeting in Vancouver on 16th of this month to demonstrate global solidarity against North Korea's nuclear and missile tests. Imports from the North shrank 81.6 percent to $54 million in December, while exports to Pyongyang contracted by 23.4 percent to $260 million, AP said, citing a spokesman for the Chinese customs agency, Huang Songping.

The White House issued a statement Friday to recognize news that trade between China and North Korea dropped 50 percent in December as a result of tightening sanctions. All told, trade between the two sides fell nearly 51 percent during the month.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will co-host the Vancouver meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland. "They are doing a better job of implementing the U.N. Security Council resolutions". Beijing has imposed limits on oil sales and cut deeply into the North's foreign revenue by ordering North Korean businesses in China to close, as well as banning purchases of its coal, textiles, seafood and other exports.

Freeland and Tillerson announced plans to hold the January 16 meeting during Tillerson's visit to Ottawa last month.

Asked whether the United States and North Korea could hold talks during the Olympics, Hook said, "No". While China says they support a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, Beijing has resisted sanctions so harsh that they might cause widespread suffering or topple Kim's regime.

A Japanese foreign ministry official, meanwhile, was quoted by Bloomberg News on Wednesday raising questions about the involvement of countries such as Colombia and Greece, which are peripheral to the North Korea crisis.

"These officials feared that the USA was already trying to shape the battlefield for a military operation against the North, and that South Koreans do not seem to have grasped the reality that the Trump administration is set on a course for preventive war".

China and Russian Federation were not invited to the meeting.

The phone call comes after the Koreas held their first high-level talks in two years.
