Winter Storm Warning for central Kansas Thursday morning

Winter Storm Warning for central Kansas Thursday morning

As snow spreads across the mountains on Wednesday, Denver and the Front Range should see rain showers during the afternoon and maybe a brief period of snow Wednesday evening.

"The heaviest snow is expected from northwestern Pennsylvania into far northern NY where upwards of a foot of new snow is expected by Saturday morning".

According to the weather service, the average high temperature for January 11 is just 31 degrees.

While this event is trending more in the direction of ice, if the moisture sticks around long enough, we could see a dusting of snow in the evening, with the highest chance for snow being in the Shoals.

Wednesday's high in Madison was 50 at 11:59 p.m., 24 degrees above the normal high and 3 degrees below the record high of 53 for January 10, set in 1975. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. Some of the snow w e see Monday could accumulate. Highs significantly colder only topping out in the lower 20s for today.

The precipitation will usher in cold and blustery conditions.

Friday night: Wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet, changing to snow through evening.

A widespread 3 to 8 inches are possible by that morning with the higher amounts most likely in the lake-effect belt.

There are going to be several hours with temperatures near freezing, which will likely lead to minor ice accumulation. Strong gusty winds will also be felt at speeds of 25-35 miles per hour.

Predicted mixed precipitation and significant snow accumulation has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a winter storm warning for the north country. Western Kentucky will get mainly rain.

In Denver, skies should be sunny to mostly sunny Thursday and Friday, with the high temperature topping out at 44 on Thursday and 51 on Friday.

Thursday night, the low will be around 10, with a wind chill reading between minus 2 and 3.

The mercury could fall as low as 14 degrees overnight, the weather service said.
