CES 2018 Had a Blackout and The Tweets Are Hilarious

CES 2018 Had a Blackout and The Tweets Are Hilarious

The first Sin City CES opened its doors 40 years ago, for starters, and the format switched from two shows every year (remember heading west in the winter and east in the summer?) to just Vegas 20 years ago.

UPDATED, 12:51 PM: Power is being restored to the world's largest consumer electronics trade show, following more than hour-long outage.

CES 2018 lost power for two hours, literally.

"We have to pay thousands of dollars to have one booth at CES - even the smallest one", said a spokesman from a Korean company. Organisers blamed an earlier downpour. "A preliminary assessment indicates that condensation from heavy rainfall caused a flashover on one of the facility's transformers", the Verge quotes the Consumer Technology Association by way of an explanation.

Although South and North Hall appear to have power, there have been reports that the power outages briefly extended to other areas in Vegas, including nearby hotels.

It is unclear what the real cause of the outage is, and attendees have mostly been moved out into the hallways of the convention center.

Some companies and attendees had a sense of humor about the situation, and took to Twitter using the hashtag #CESBlackout to compete for funniest blackout tweet.

Nikon pitched its products, too, tweeting "Power goes out at CES?".

Meanwhile, Canon capitalized on the opportunity to demonstrate their camera's low-light shooting capability.

A partial blackout is seen during the 2018 CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. January 10, 2018 in this picture obtained from social media.

"Someone told Alexa to turn off the lights", one person simply wrote.
