Gerrit Cole reportedly traded to Astros

Earlier this week it was reported that Gerrit Cole had been traded to the Houston Astros from the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the report quickly was debunked as "false" and Cole remained a Pirate for the time being.

After months - maybe years - of interest in the starting pitcher Gerrit Cole, the Yankees stood by as the Pirates agreed to trade the right-hander to the Astros on Saturday night, according to reports.

OFFICIAL: The #Astros have acquired Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates. "Acquiring these four quality young players, three of whom we project to be an important part of our 2018 team, with many years of potential contribution, is an important step for us as we work toward bringing playoff baseball back to our fans".

Cole is coming off of a career-worst ERA at 4.26 in 203 innings pitched, but he remains one of the hardest throwers in the game.

Cole, 27, is in his second year of arbitration eligibility. The right-hander has a career 5.13 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and averages 12.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

He's under team control for two years, adds depth to a starting rotation that features Dallas Keuchel and Justin Verlander and didn't cause the Astros to empty their loaded farm system to make the deal happen.

Musgrove started 15 games for the Astros last season and had a 4.77 ERA.

The sixth overall pick of the 2013 draft, Moran went 4-for-11 with a triple, home run and three RBIs in seven games for the Astros in 2017.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
