RB Leipzig chief Rangnick: Keita must tell us he wants Liverpool move

The Reds confirmed previous year that they had successfully agreed a £48m deal to sign Keita on July 1, 2018, but the recent sale of Philippe Coutinho has forced the Reds to attempt to bring the transfer forward. "We don't have a reason to sell before the summer".

The 33-year-old, who played for Hamburg between 2006 and 2009, has signed for Mainz until the end of the season. He is starting today. "There is nothing more to say".

In Germany the hints continue that Jurgen Klopp is closing in on his man, but Liverpool will need to back their manager financially.

"My understanding is there is nothing to say about it", Klopp said.

Speaking on the Transfer Talk podcast, Balague said: "I think Liverpool are going to try to offer more money if necessary, call it a loan deal, but they want to offer more money to Leipzig".

Leipzig are already out of the Champions League and the midfielder would be ineligible to play in Europe were he to move to Liverpool in January.

Liverpool reportedly want to bring Keita to Merseyside early after losing Philippe Countinho, who signed for Barcelona last week for 160 million euros (US$192 million).

After Leipzig's Jean-Kevin Augustin had a penalty saved by Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann, Keita struck by rifling a shot home off his right boot on 41 minutes.

A few people even identified Keita's lack of celebration as a clear hint that the Guinean is leaving for Anfield early and that the goal could be his last in a Leipzig shirt, although the fact the goal took a massive deflection may have had something to do with the midfielder not celebrating as much as usual.
