IITs Shot Down Government's Proposal to Let NTA Conduct JEE Advanced

A meeting was held at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, preceded by The Joint Admission Board (JAB) to decide the dates of JEE Advanced 2018 and the exam is scheduled to be conducted on May 20, 2018.

JEE Advanced is the second stage of Joint Entrance Examination and the gateway for admission to B.E./B.Tech courses in IITs, ISM Dhanbad and IISc Bangalore.

As always, the examination will be conducted by one of the seven zonal of IITs namely IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee that is decided by the rotational scheme.

The government of India wanted to grant permission for NTA to conduct JEE Advanced 2018, which is a Union Cabinet approved setting under the chairmanship of PMO India. This agency would be responsible for conducting all the entrance examinations in the country so that the educational bodies such as CBSE and AICTE may be relieved.

In the first year, this examination body is responsible to take over and conduct examinations presently organized by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE); UGC’s National Eligibility Test (NET), National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET). CBSE will hand over the accountability of conducting all these entrance examinations to the National Testing Agency. After the success of these tests, the responsibility of other entrance exams would be taken over by the NTA in coming years.

Formation of NTA

CBSE requested Human Resources Development Ministry to lessen their extra load of conducting entrance examination, thus leading to the creation of NTA. This was because CBSE is majorly an affiliating school board with its primary authority of conducting only board examinations for Class X and Class XII.

IITs rejected Government's Proposal of letting NTA conduct JEE Advanced

In the meeting of IIT directors held in December 2017 in Chennai, the institute decided to be against the Government’s proposal of NTA’s involvement in JEE advanced. The NTA was not approved by the IIT’s to conduct JEE advanced that is conducted for securing a seat in 23 premier engineering schools of the country.

If NTA will conduct JEE Advanced 2018, it may not trim down the load of IITs

The major reason behind this negative reaction seems to be that the burden of IITs will not be lessening by merely handing the entrance test. This is because the examination is very important and cannot solely be dependent on an agency like NTA. The officials of the agency will still have to keep a track with the faculty houses of IITs for various decisions regarding the examination such as setting question paper, checking of the answers sheets and the announcement of the results and so on.

The directors may also interfere at each examination centers by sending their team of teachers to interrogate that the examination is going well or not. This shows that IITs are overprotective of their entrance examinations. They even refuse to merge their exam with AICEE for common entrance examinations for admissions to all centrally running Government colleges.

There is a possibility that IITs do not want to allow any sort of interference of any Governmental authority in their conduction of entrance examination.

One more reason can be that NTA is not experienced and this may hinder the standard of the entrance examination of JEE Advanced. The institutes want the level of examinations and strictness to be maintained as it is, so that the value of the engineering exams may not lower down for any reason.

Another possibility opinioned by many people across the country is the earnings of the institute. This might seem vague but it is true that institutes earn a lot with the conduction of the exam. This may reduce if the examination authority will be a Government body.

Similarly, one of the other major decisions is yet awaited regarding the attitude of IIM NTA proposal, whether they will decide to part with Common Admission Test and hand over the responsibility of conducting the exam to NTA. This decision of IIMs might be affected by the decision of IITs.

IITs will soon announce the final decision regarding the conduction of JEE Advanced in 2019.
