Target bringing same-day delivery to Orlando next month

A month into its acquisition of Shipt, Target has moved forward on its plans to offer same-day delivery to roughly half of its stores by early 2018.

According to a Thursday news release, starting February 1, Shipt will deliver from Target stores in South Florida and Tampa. A week later, the service starts in Orlando, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Daytona Beach, Fort Myers, Gainesville, Gulf Shores, Naples, Sarasota, Space Coast, St. Augustine and the Treasure Coast.

Founded in 2014, headquartered in Birmingham, AL, and operating in more than 72 US markets, Shipt is a membership-based grocery marketplace and same-day delivery platform that allows customers (who pay $99 per year) to place online orders for fresh food and household essentials like cleaning supplies from nearby stores.

Target announced to acquire online same-day delivery platform Shipt, Inc for $550 million in cash in December previous year. "And we'll grow our team by hiring more than 100,000 new shoppers on top of the 20,000 shoppers we have today", said Bill Smith, founder and CEO, Shipt. The deal, one of Target's largest, comes as all retailers look to broaden their distribution capabilities.

"Our teams moved at lightning speed to get Target up and running on Shipt's platform in less than eight weeks", John Mulligan, Target's chief operating officer, said in a statement.

The announcement of the service says customers can request the groceries, electronics, etc., that they order to be delivered in an hour.

The service includes groceries, electronics, home products and "essentials", which the companies define as small items that aren't groceries, such as toiletries, hand soaps and similar household items. The service will kick off from Target stores in the Tampa and South Florida areas.
