Gerber announces first "spokesbaby" with down syndrome

Gerber announces first

A popular baby product brand, Gerber has named Lucas, a baby affected with Down syndrome as "Spokesbaby of the Year". Cortney Warren said she entered the contest on a whim, after a relative pointed out an ad seeking submissions. The winning photo, posted on Instagram, is of a broadly smiling Lucas in a smart polka dot bowtie and mint-colored polo.

"Every year, we choose the baby who best exemplifies Gerber's longstanding heritage of recognizing that every baby is a Gerber baby", Bill Partyka, CEO and president of Gerber said.

An 18-month-old boy with Down's Syndrome has become the new face of U.S. baby food giant Gerber. But, today is a new day.

This cutie made history Wednesday. Baby Lucas hails from Dalton, Ga., and took the top spot while competing against 140,000 contestants. Thank you for celebrating the diversity of the human condition! But Lucas is special, for so many reasons.

Lucas's mother hoped that the spotlight on her child could "sheds light on the special needs community and educates people that with acceptance and support, individuals with special needs have the potential to change the world".

Cortney Warren told "Today" she is excited for the honor, but she wants her son to be recognized as the amusing, outgoing, music-loving child he is.

As part of the contest, the baby's image will be used across Gerber's social media platforms.

"As a father, seeing your child succeed in life and go to school is something I'm looking forward to", said Jason in the "Today" interview, overcome with emotion. "We're hoping when he grows up and looks back on this, he'll be proud of himself and not ashamed of his disability".
