19 killed, dozens injured in Hong Kong bus crash

A double-decker bus crash happening Saturday in the Tai Po area of Hong Kong has claimed the lives of 17 men and 2 women, with dozens of injured survivors.

The train, which was carrying 78 passengers and five crew, was part of a newly expanded faster rail service along the route linking Seattle and Portland, Oregon - featuring new locomotives.

Earlier, 13 deaths and 40 cases of injuries were reported after a bus turned over in Tai Po Road at 18:00 local time (10:00 GMT).

As of 7.45pm, police said two people were still trapped in the bus. It was not immediately known what caused the incident. "People fell on one another and got tossed from side to side", the passenger said.

Television footage showed the mangled remains of the bus as it lay toppled on the side of a major highway in the northern reaches of the city.

"(The driver was) intentionally using the bus to throw a tantrum", another injured passenger told the Oriental Daily.

In 2008, a speeding bus careered out of control at a Sai Kung roundabout, leaving 18 people dead and 44 injured.

The safety of Hong Kong's waterways has also remained under scrutiny since 39 people were killed when a high-speed ferry and a pleasure boat crashed in 2012.
