Israel downs Iranian drone and strikes Syria, F-16 crashes

In response, the IDF said it attacked the drone's "launch beacon" in Syria in "a complicated surgical strike", destroying it, as well as other targets involved in the launch.

Syrian anti-aircraft fire triggered rocket sirens in northern Israel, first in the northern Israeli town of Beit She'an and later in the surrounding areas and Golan Heights.

The military says it is "monitoring events and is fully prepared for further action". The army said the drone's remains were in Israeli hands.

Syria state television later cited a Syrian military official as saying that Israeli "aggression" targeted the Syrian army base in the central region of the country. "The aircraft was identified by the Aerial Defense Systems at an early phase and was under surveillance until the interception", the military said in a statement. Syrian air defenses struck more than one jet responding to the aggression, the official said.

The Syrian government is yet to comment. The government of the Arab republic moved on then with accusing Tel Aviv of effectively aiding the terrorist forces in the country. It says sirens sounded in northern Israel as a result of the anti-aircraft fire from Syria.
