Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin Together Almost Isn't Fair

Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin Together Almost Isn't Fair

Lucy is a ski-racer's best friend.

On Sunday, the three-time Olympian won her third straight world cup downhill and capture her 81st world cup win.

He certainly has a lot of hype to live up to, but Ligety appears more than ready to take on the challenge in Pyeongchang.

Ted Ligety: I grew up in Park City, Utah, so the obvious thing to do when you grow up there is to go skiing.

"I've seen it a lot - she's good at the top, she's good in the middle and then she crushes everybody on the bottom". My parents like to joke that the mountain was my babysitter. "But I know he's watching, and I know that he's going to help me and I'm going to win for him", Vonn said.

"Just trying to stay true to the dream I had as a little girl", Shiffrin said. I'm very happy with how I feel physically, mentally and on skis'. So it wasn't until I was 19 years old that I actually thought I had a chance.

"It's extremely lonely on the road and since I got divorced I had a lot of free time on my hands at night". I definitely wasn't like one of the child prodigies or favorites coming up as a kid, but I worked hard and I loved it.

Vonn ran into quite a bit of travel trouble making it to South Korea this week. What does that mean to you? "I think I know how to handle myself better than I did previously". Now that I'm in race season, I try to get at least two lifts in a week.

LIGETY: I kind of always knew I would make it.

A dog wags it tail, whether you bring home a gold medal or not.

Ligety: I'll be competing in the combined, super-G and the giant slalom.

Less than three days later, she was in NY for even more television appearances.

"In Lenzerheide I was emotional and crying and frustrated and not really myself so that was a sign to me that I was just a little bit too exhausted", she said of her final giant slalom World Cup race before the Games, where she finished seventh.

O: Who do you think will be your biggest competition on the slopes?

Shiffrin's life forever changed in Sochi on that February evening, when at 18, she became the youngest-ever Olympic slalom champion.

"Hopefully they can find me a guy now", she said, then paused. "Downhill in the olympics is any given day", the 35-year-old said. "Apparently we don't have the right documents to fly???"

With nods to the country's landmarks and ancient culture as well as its potential to lead the world in future technological innovations, the opening ceremony at Olympic Stadium featured athletes from 91 countries, including a delegation from North Korea that marched into Olympic Stadium with athletes from South Korea. Ted Ligety keeps his two Olympic gold medals at his parents' house.
