Rachel Brand Stepping Down as Justice Department's No. 3

McCabe's wife previously ran as a Democrat for a seat in Virginia's state Senate and received donations from then-Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, a close ally of Hillary Clinton and former president Bill Clinton.Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey, who was leading the agency's Russian Federation investigation, in May 2017, saying he took the action because of "this Russian Federation thing".

Brand is the most senior official under Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

The New York Times first reported her departure.

Doing so could have put her in charge of the special counsel and, by extension, left her in the cross hairs of the president.

Ms. Brand, who became the associate attorney general in May 2017, is leaving for a job as general counsel in the private sector.

On 2 February, just hours before Trump approved the release of the Republican memo, Sessions offered praise for Rosenstein, the department's No 2 official, and Brand, saying they "represent the kind of quality and leadership that we want in the department".

Rachel Brand, associate attorney general in the Department of Justice, is stepping down from her position, Fox News has confirmed.

Neither Brand nor a justice department spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment.

Her office oversees the Antitrust Division, the Civil Division, the Environment and Natural Resources Division, the Tax Division, the Office of Justice Programs, the Community Oriented Policing Services, the Community Relations Service, the Office of Dispute Resolution, the Office of Violence Against Women, the Office of Information and Privacy, the Executive Office for United States Trustees and the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission.

Trump admitted to the New York Times previous year that he would not have picked Sessions as his attorney general had he known Sessions would recuse himself. She has been seen as a rising star within the conservative legal world.
