Stranger spanks toddler in checkout line

"I told him, "no, it's too late bud".

According to police, Juan Guevara Martinez, 62, was standing in line at the Kroger at 48 Bullsboro Drive when he reportedly grabbed a 2-year-old by the arm and spanked him. The next, a man with "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" was grabbing the boy by the arm and spanking him, according to a police report obtained from officials in Newnan, Ga., south of Atlanta. Investigators said Martinez was drunk at the time. Morris says he said "no" twice.

The boy's grandmother, Michelle Lott, said she was pleased with Morris' reaction.

"That's how we deal with kids in Mexico", said Martinez, directly after spanking Morris's child.

Once they were finished checking out, Morris sent his family to wait in the vehicle while police began talking with Martinez who was still in line waiting to check out.

Morris, seen left with his son and partner, said the toddler was shocked but not injured.

'He really just seemed astonished that this guy made a decision to spank him. Police responded to the scene, arresting Martinez. "He just looked at me and seemed confused by the whole thing".

After allegedly trying to resist arrest, Martinez is said to have kicked cars and been aggressive as he as taken to the patrol vehicle. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was medically cleared, and then booked into the county jail on charges of cruelty to children, obstruction of officers, battery and disorderly conduct.

Martinez is being held in jail with a $3,400 bond.

The store has banned him from coming back.
