Syrian warplanes kill 76, injure 140 in eastern Ghouta, monitor says

The death toll rose after the bombing of a market in the village of Arbin, where airstrikes killed 27, including 10 children and three women, the monitor said.

The incident might result in further conflict in the region in Syria's oil-rich east where the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, control large swaths of territory in northern of the country after driven out IS from the area.

Meanwhile in Eastern Ghouta now, where 400,000 civilians are trapped and under siege since 2013, deliveries of food, water and medicine have not been allowed since last November.

In Turkey, Tillerson will meet with senior Turkish officials to discuss "a range of bilateral and regional issues", said the US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert in a statement.

"The government of the Syrian Arab Republic calls on the UNSC to condemn the massacre and hold the global coalition responsible for the killing and wounding of thousands of civilians, including children, women and elderly and to pay compensation to the families of the victims".

"These are the worst four days that Eastern Ghouta has ever gone through", said Hamza, an overwhelmed doctor at the Erbin clinic who was treating wounded patients. They said they had tracked at least 76 airstrikes on Tuesday and Wednesday alone in the region.

"Eastern Ghouta is a de-escalation area".

"That is not realistic", Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told reporters at the UN.

At the same time the current United Nations humanitarian co-ordinator in Syria challenged the Assad regime directly in an unprecedented way, saying the organisation "cannot remain silent any longer" because of the "dramatic deterioration" in terms of escalating civilian suffering as starvation and death so common place.

Asked by MEE whether Paris was ruling out military action or supporting United States military action against Syrian government positions, a French diplomatic source said, "no further comment".

The online smear campaign by PYD/PKK terrorists and their supporters against the Turkish military operation in Syria continues to be exposed with the emergence of more old photos misrepresented as being recent and relevant.

Ankara announced Thursday it would host a new three-way summit to revive efforts to end the war, which has killed at least 340,000 people and displaced millions since 2011.

The pro-Damascus forces "began shelling it with artillery", he added.
