At a reception before the ceremony, Pence and Kim Yong Nam were in the same room, according to Jarrod Agen, his deputy chief of staff, but Pence "did not come across the North Korean delegation" at the event.

Kim and his entourage including Kim Yo-Jong, the sister of North Korean leader, were welcomed by South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyun at Incheon International Airport.

The aide noted that Pence "and our team were aware she'd be in attendance".

But more than the light show, fireworks display and captivating sounds was the apparent unity of North Korea and South Korea, two nations who technically remain at war. "The VP sat with Moon and Abe in the box after days of meetings with both leaders".

She is the first member of the ruling Kim family to go to South Korea.

As is Olympic tradition, Greece, which held the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, led the parade of athletes into the sports stadium in Pyeongchang.

As they shook hands, the North and South Koreans spoke briefly.

She is on a USA sanctions list over alleged links to human rights abuses in North Korea. This was met with worldwide sanctions as well as a flurry of insults between President Donald Trump and North Korean state media.

Athletes from both North and South Korea marched under one flag at the opening ceremony, bringing spectators to their feet. But Moon wants closer relations with North Korea as a way to build peace between the two countries.

"North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the "Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times".

Athletes from 92 countries and territories are taking part in the Olympics. Yarnold got the honour of carrying the British flag at the opening ceremony in Korea and was incredibly proud to do so.

North and South Korea have always been at odds, so when athletes from both nations walked under the same flag at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday the world paid attention.
