Winter Olympics: Opening Night Ratings Down From 2014 Sochi Games

According to Pence's office, there was "no interaction" between the US vice president and the North Korean officials.

Kim Yong-nam and Kim Yo-jong, both of them in dark coats with fur collars, were met by the South's unification minister and other officials.

That said, these officials said that if the North Koreans had approached Pence with pleasantries, he would have responded in kind.

Pence spent the days leading up to Friday's opening ceremonies warning that the North was trying to "hijack the message and imagery of the Olympic Games" with its "propaganda".

At the end of his weekly general audience at the Vatican Feb. 7, the pope offered his prayers and greetings to all those gathered for the XXIII Winter Olympic Games Feb. 9-25 in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

These are the first of three Olympics in which the world is invited in succession to Asia: PyeongChang in 2018, Summer Games in Tokyo in 2020 and Winter Games in Beijing in 2022.

"It was a Korean spectator and he was removed from the stadium as soon as he was taken off the stage", a spokeswoman for Games organisers told AFP. After some speculation that South Korea could violate worldwide sanctions by allowing Kim in the country-she faces sanctions for her complicity in gross human rights violations and the nation's illegal nuclear program - Seoul welcomed her at Incheon global Airport on Friday after an abbreviated processing procedure that Chosun Ilbo suggests may not have abided by what worldwide law regarding sanctioned individuals requires. "She's considered the future of the sport", Reiter said. Analysts say that the missiles, which were successfully flight tested three times past year, could potentially reach deep into the U.S. mainland when perfected.

Pyeongchang has waited a long time for this moment.

Shiffrin's only medal so far is a gold in slalom at age 18 in 2014 at Sochi.

The sanctions have complicated South Korean electronics maker Samsung's planned giveaway of 4,000 Galaxy Note 8 smartphones valued at more than $900 to Olympic athletes.

Pence stood to welcome the USA athletes as the Korean pop hit Gangnam Style blared around the stadium, sparking the "Horse Dance" in the crowd and among the volunteers. In an interview with NBC's Nightly News, Pence spoke about taking action against any upcoming nuclear threats posed by North Korean.

Some analysts maintain that Mr Kim Jong Un, who extended an overture to improve inter-Korean ties during his New Year's Day speech, is only trying to drive a wedge between South Korea and the US.

"We will continue to isolate North Korea until it abandons its nuclear and ballistic missile program once and for all", Pence said.

The U.N. says Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had a brief exchange with North Korea's nominal head of state and "reiterated his expectation and hope that all parties will use dialogue to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Norio Maruyama said he had not seen the flag so he did not want to comment. That was apparent in the streets of Daegwallyeong, the small village where the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium is located.

The opening ceremony kicked off what will be the biggest Winter Olympic Games to date with more than 2,900 athletes from 92 countries competing.
