According to reports, Polavaram project has been granted a total of Rs 417.44 crore by Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP). The clear deficit in the two claims is of about Rs 3,000 crore which has led to acrimony between the two allies. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that his BJP has always been for justice to Andhra Pradesh ever since its bifurcation and the central government is gradually fulfilling commitments made to Andra Pradesh at the time of bifurcation while new demands are being looked into.

"The release (of Rs 417.44 crore) is towards the amount already utilised by the state against the irrigation component (of Polavaram) after April 1, 2014", Union water resources ministry's senior joint commissioner, R P S Verma, was quoted as saying.

"During the meeting Budget and fund allocations to Andhra Pradesh were discussed".

Lending support to the issue, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that his party supported the "just demands" of Andhra Pradesh for special category status.
