Hope Solo says Athlete Council 'failed many' in US Soccer election

Cordeiro was victorious in the first contested U.S. Soccer presidential election since 1998, winning the majority vote in an eight-candidate field which also featured Paul Caligiuri, Kathy Carter, Steve Gans, Kyle Martino, Hope Solo, Michael Winograd and Eric Wynalda.

Carter's support among delegates attending USSF's annual general meeting slipped each round - from 34.6 percent to 33.3 on the second ballot, to 10.6 on the third, when the field had shrunk to five.

The "change" parties had an agreement on the language of the statement, but Wynalda soon pulled out, according to one person present at the meeting, because he wanted language inserted into the agreement that the six agreed to back the change candidate with the highest vote total after the first ballot.

Cordeiro immediately takes over for Gulati, who decided against seeking a fourth four-year term after the USA was unable to make the 32-team World Cup field in Russian Federation.

Cordeiro survived an election with seven other candidates and three ballots to finally accumulate 68.6 percent of the vote in the final round.

Gulati, a member of FIFA's ruling Council, was originally elected to the post of U.S. Soccer President in 2006 and ran unopposed in each of the last three elections.

Wynalda and Solo received 8.9 and 1.4 per cent respectively.

"I've been blessed to live the American Dream, and I want to help our athletes achieve theirs", he said on his campaign site. I promise you I'm going to work together with all of you to bring us together as one united soccer community.

Cordeiro, 61, replaces Sunil Gulati, who had been at the helm of the federation for the past two decades.

He has been credited with working to reform governance with a focus on greater transparency and accountability.

He has been treasurer, chaired the budget committee, and been director of the U.S. Soccer Foundation.

USA's men's national team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation, marking the first time since 1986 the States have been left out of the final World Cup field. Now, he's charged, among other things, with running the USA end of a bid with Mexico and Canada for the right to host the 2026 World Cup.

The appointment comes at a pivotal time for U.S. Soccer.
