The parade of athletes began with Greece, the home of the original Olympics, and the last nation to enter was Korea under a unified flag.

U.S. vice president Mike Pence is using his appearance at the Winter Olympics to call on the worldwide community to get tougher on North Korea's nuclear ambitions and human rights abuses.

At a VIP reception before the opening ceremony, Mr Pence and Kim Yong Nam were in the same room, according to Jarrod Agen, his deputy chief of staff, but Mr Pence "did not come across the North Korean delegation" at the event.

"Make no mistake about it".

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, speaking before leaving for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, said on Friday he wanted to convey to the world that cooperation among the United States, Japan and South Korea on the North Korean threat remained firm.

"I think, in the United States of America, just as in France - where the president was impressed on Bastille Day - we can celebrate our troops, not in any way ever be associated with the provocations of the North".

North Korea's latest display of its military hardware focused on missiles and less on tanks and artillery, suggesting it was trying to project the image of a country with advanced capabilities in warfare.

He met North Korean defectors and paid respects at the Cheonan Memorial in Pyeongtaek, which honours the 46 South Korean sailors killed in a 2010 torpedo attack blamed on the North.

"There is no daylight between the United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan on the need to continue to isolate North Korea economically and diplomatically until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missile program", Pence told reporters on his flight back to the United States. The North has always denied it was responsible.

Lawmakers from Moon's liberal ruling party have talked about the possibility of South Korea sending a special envoy to Pyongyang to meet with Kim Jong Un.

The pranksters made their appearance as war threatens to break out between the US, North Korea and South Korea. There's even speculation of a summit between Kim and Moon. Pence had said they would "see what happens" when asked about a potential meeting earlier in the week, but the North's foreign ministry shot down any chance of talks on Thursday. She is the first member of the Kim family to visit the South since the end of the Korean War in 1953. Warmbier is set to attend the opening ceremony on Friday as a guest of the vice president.
