2 women killed, Detroit officer shot in standoff with barricaded gunman

Two women have been killed and a Detroit police officer has been shot but expected to recover according to authorities.

A male officer was shot Sunday night during a barricaded gunman situation on Detroit's east side, police said.

At 10:27 p.m. police got a call of shots fired on the east side at the 1900 block of Lamont Street.

As of 7 a.m., the scene is still active, Officer Dan Donakowski, a Detroit Police Department spokesman, said.

"The suspect has made statements he would not go down without a fight", Williams said.

The incident comes weeks after Detroit Police Officer Glenn Doss Jr., 25, a Detroit native and two-year member of the police department, was shot in the head the night of January 24 while responding to a domestic dispute.

Another of Detroit police officer, Waldis Johnson, has remained unconscious in critical condition since being shot while responding to a domestic assault on April 30, 2017. He also has seven guns registered under his name as a CPL holder. The suspect began shooting at police as they arrived to the scene, which provoked the barricaded gunman situation.

Compounding the situation - a person in a neighboring home also has a least one weapon and is threatening but not actively shooting as of this report. Anybody suffering from a mental illness who is not being treated can basically resort to any type of violence.
