France presses Russian Federation over Syria as more die in besieged rebel area

Meanwhile, Turkish officials said the leaders of Turkey, Russia and Iran will meet in Istanbul to discuss peace efforts for Syria.

The statement comes amid a wave of escalating violence as pro-Assad forces bombarded the rebel-held enclaves over a period of several days, with news outlets reporting a death toll of at least 150 in Eastern Ghouta alone. "The air strikes need to end", Florence Parly said on France Inter radio, giving no further details. The Syrian government has denied such reports.

The doctor in Eastern Ghouta listed the casualties of a bloody day. In a news release, the United Nations human rights wing noted that numerous rockets and mortars continue to be fired from opposition-held areas into populated areas of Government-held capital Damascus and surrounding suburbs, with at least seven civilians reported killed and 18 others injured in various locations between 6 and 9 February.

Afrin has been a major hideout for the PYD since July 2012 when the Assad regime in Syria left the city to the terror group without a fight.
