J&K: 1 CRPF personnel died in Karan Nagar encounter

The officials added that the sentry saw two militants carrying bags and AK 47 rifles approaching the camp of the 23 battalion of CRPF in Karan Nagar area around 4.30 am.

The sentry fired forcing the militants to flee, averting an attack on the camp. "He challenged them and opened fire as well", a spokesman of the CRPF said.

The trooper was wounded in the shootout as the security forces prepared for a final assault against the holed-up militants, a police officer said. "They ran into the nearby building behind National School", said Yadav.

Police sources said there were an exchange for fire between the militants and security forces. The incident occurred on the when the Army was paying its respects to the five soldiers who had been martyred during the attack in Jammu's Sunjuwan.

As of now, five families have been evacuated from the houses around the camp and the operation is underway, confirmed the official.

According to news agency ANI, a CRPF personnel, who was seriously injured in the gunfight during the ongoing encounter at the CRPF camp in Srinagar's Karan Nagar, succumbed to his injuries.
