Ill-wind blows no good for Pyeongchang games

Shiffrin also harbours ambitions of success in the giant slalom and finished fifth at the Olympics four years ago.

Tomorrow's event is a more favourable one for Taylor, and after Saturday's race she commented that much of her season's focus has been pointing towards it.

On Wednesday at Yongpyong, snow was falling and wind blowing this way and that.

Shiffrin was supposed to get started with the giant slalom on Monday; that race was rescheduled for Thursday and will now be her first at these Winter Games. Competitors get two shots at the course, then the woman with the lowest combined time claims victory.

Of the weather delays, Paul Kristofic, the women's head alpine coach, said: "Everyone is a little bummed out when a day like this happens, but they do happen, so we're quite used to it".

"It was a long and hard day today", said the former Norwegian racer, twice a super-G world champion.

While the remainder of Tuesday's session indicated that safety was not an issue on the downhill run, Jansrud questioned whether the integrity of the event had been maintained.

"Due to very strong wind gusts, the programme is delayed", the International Ski Federation said.

She will have to deal with both a challenging field and potential fatigue, as the women's giant slalom is scheduled for the day before the women's slalom.

That super-G was originally scheduled for Thursday but was pushed to Friday once the men's downhill was moved.

Additionally, Svindal and Jansrud could join Aamodt as the only Norwegian alpine skiers with multiple Olympic gold medals.

All of the shifting means that they will try to open the 11-race Alpine program Tuesday at the Jeongseon hill with the men's combined, which adds times from one downhill run in the morning and one slalom run in the afternoon.

Slovakia's Petra Vlhova won in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, in the last World Cup race before the Winter Games, and has been a skier to watch since her junior days.

However, she grabbed the silver in the event at the 2017 World Championships, and she can be optimistic of scoring two gold medals if she finds her strongest form.
