United Kingdom charity watchdog to probe Oxfam

Oxfam has been rocked after the claims emerged of sexual misconduct by aid workersWill people cancel their monthly donations to Oxfam?

Organisations including Marks and Spencer and the Duke of Edinburgh's (DofE) Award have also said they are considering their association with the charity.

"I am nothing short of horrified by the allegations against Oxfam International", she told the Telegraph.

"I told Oxfam they must now demonstrate the moral leadership necessary to address this scandal, rebuild the trust of the British public, their staff and the people they aim to help, and deliver progress on these assurances", she added in a statement.

"All I can tell you about this terrible revelation about Oxfam is that I am devastated", Driver tweeted.

A Visa spokesperson added: "We are engaged with Oxfam to understand what steps have been taken to address staff misconduct and ensure alignment with our own standards and values".

The Charity Commission has launched an inquiry into Oxfam.

Officials from Oxfam are due to meet the Charity Commission on Wednesday.

The prostitution scandal engulfing worldwide aid charity Oxfam is a symptom of a "global problem" in the aid industry, a former senior United Nations aid worker says.

Oxfam also confirmed 52 safeguarding incidents occurred within its trading retail division a year ago, and a former Oxfam volunteer manager told HuffPost of her fears abuse could "absolutely" take place in shops.

Merlin was later folded into another British charity, Save the Children, which says that it does not have records of what happened.

Oxfam "allowed Mr Van Hauwermeiren a "phased and dignified" resignation in 2011 to protect the charity's reputation", wrote the Times.

Nearly as appalling is the way Oxfam GB quietly fired four of the seven and allowed the other three to resign.

Almost 1,300 people are said to have cancelled their monthly donations to the charity in the wake of the reports.

The number is far above the average cancellation rate of 600 per month.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation was yet to receive a response from US-based Mercy Corps but the organisation said it would produce the numbers later yesterday.

The charity faces a potential funding crisis as the UK Government reviews its relationship with the organisation in light of what worldwide development secretary Penny Mordaunt has described as "deeply despicable" allegations. Oxfam has apologised for the behaviour of aid workers, but denies a coverup, the CNN said.

Oxfam International's executive director Winnie Byanyima said: "Oxfam does not yet know the nature of formal charges, if any, against Dr Fuentes Knight".

She added new whistleblowing procedures were put in place and said Oxfam often worked in hard locations where "the rule of law isn't going on".

The actress has become the first high profile celebrity to publicly withdraw her support for the charity over the Haiti controversy.

Evans accused senior managers of failing to act and also warned of assaults on children volunteering in Oxfam's hundreds of charity shops in Britain.
