Daytona 500: What you need to know about Sunday's race

But while the race has history and tradition, it also has change.

There's never a more hopeful part of the year than the start of a new season.

Showing that he can win at Daytona International Speedway in February has boosted Team Penske's Brad Keselowski to the top of the board for the "Great American Race".

"I feel like this is its own race", said 2017 cup champion Martin Truex Jr. William Byron won the championship last season but has graduated to Cup and won't be defending his title.

While Kennington had to race his way into the field a year ago, with only 40 cars pre-entered, he doesn't have to stress out over making the field so he and his Gaunt Brothers Racing team can focus on getting the auto ready for the race.

"This is a tough one, you know?"

No question about that. Thursday's two 150-mile Can-Am Duels (broadcast on FS1, starting with the first qualifying race at 7 p.m., followed by the second around 8:30 p.m.) will determine the starting order of the rest of the field - and perhaps tip off the drivers, crews and fans as to which teams are the ones to beat over the weekend. Trust me, that is pressure.

While Kennington wants to race well and score a solid finish, he's also grateful for the support from all the NASCAR fans in Canada. Insane how it works. "I've made some starts in the Xfinity Series but this will be my first time at Daytona". We just come here to win.

Check out the race order for the Daytona qualifying. "About winning this race and how big it would be".

Keselowski has yet to win the Daytona 500 but is likely the best restrictor-place racer on the circuit now that Earnhardt Jr. has retired.

Denny Hamlin: The 2016 Daytona 500 victor had a strong showing in qualifying, finishing second.

Not until I see the replay. "He occasionally self-destructs, but I think he's reached a point in his career that he is going to put it all together and win the championship". You want to get a feel for what kind of speed you have and how the auto will draft. Daytona 500 is pretty high on that list and we'd like to do it. "If you want action on a racetrack, look no further than the Daytona 500". Do you think about this? I know we've come close at Daytona a few times now.

Suárez finished 29th in last year's race. "Even as great as our season was, I think all of us are still surprised that we were able to get it done because it's the playoffs, and we've seen what happened to us past year in 2016". Here's all the info you need to watch live. Is that accurate to say? That said, we were really slow by ourselves.

Recently, we conducted an autograph session at The Showroom @ Furniture Row in Denver and I was blown away by the awesome response. One good thing about these (superspeedway) races is anybody has a shot to win. But on the other hand, you try not to be too risky and find yourself in a wreck and forced to a back-up vehicle for the 500. However, there are still opportunities for teams that are a little off on speed to make something happen as well.
