"For the most part, automotive manufacturers continue to meet consumer' vehicle dependability expectations", Sargent said in a statement.

The Vehicle Dependability Study, now in its 29th year, measures the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100)-covering 177 specific problems grouped into eight major vehicle categories-during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old vehicles (the 2018 study examines 2015 model-year vehicles). The study showed that complains from customers were most frequently about issues with voice recognition technology and Bluetooth connectivity.

J.D. Power finds that vehicle residual values can be significantly affected by better long-term quality. General Motors' Buick division nabbed the highest rating of any mass-market brand. As a refresher, the J.D. Power vehicle dependability study assesses vehicles that are three years old and still with their original owner. Porsche was close behind with 100 problems per 100 vehicles. The Rio ranked highest, with a score of 103 PP100.

Other findings in the study included Fiat being identified as the most improved brand, with its owners reporting 106 fewer problems per 100 cars over 2017 than they did over 2016. Infiniti has the largest improvement in rank, moving from 29 to 4. Kia's fifthplace ranking is the brand's best-ever VDS performance. Nissan itself also had its best-ever ranking.

While many studies look at the quality of vehicles soon after they roll off the showroom floor, the real question is how they hold up after a few years on the road.

Toyota was also a standout with six segment winners, the most of any corporate group: Lexus CT, Lexus ES, Lexus GS, Lexus RX, Toyota Prius and Toyota Tacoma. The Q3 is the only model in this year's study to receive an award in its introductory year.

Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus luxury brand ranked top in a dependability survey for the seventh consecutive year, major US market research firm J.D. Power and Associates said Wednesday. The study was conducted in the fourth quarter of 2017. In the 2018 study, Kia improved across every category. Established in 1968, J.D. Power is headquartered in Costa Mesa, Calif., and has offices serving North/South America, Asia Pacific and Europe.
