US Olympians to keep Statue of Liberty image on helmets after 'misunderstanding'

Hensley, who helped the United States women capture the past two world championships, has a large Statue of Liberty image painted on the left side of her mask, and reserve Alex Rigsby has one on the chin of her mask.

Why is this a problem now and not when Jessie Vetter was allowed to keep her Statue of Liberty design in 2014? The American goalie went through all the designs on it: the U.S. crest on the top, the drawing of the famous V-J Day kiss on one side, the bald eagle on the other side, and, last but definitely not least, a stamp depicting the Statue of Liberty right on the chin which juts out when shooters take aim.

The IOC rule cited for the order states that "no item may feature the wording or lyrics from national anthems, motivational words, public/political messaging or slogans related to national identity".

Team USA women's hockey goalies Nicole Hensley and Alex Rigsby are playing in the 2018 Winter Olympics wearing goaltender masks that include an American-themed shield, a bald eagle and an image of the Statue of Liberty.

Hannah Brandt, of the United States, celebrates celebrates after scoring a goal against the team from Russian Federation during the third period of the preliminary round of the women's hockey game at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Gangneung, South Korea, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018.

Rigsby has one on the chin of her mask.

"I have no doubt we're ready", said Hensley, who made 13 saves in her Olympic debut.

Feb 5, 2018; Gangneung, KOR; USA goalie Alex Rigsby (33) looks on during a training session for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games at Kwandong Hockey Centre. It's important to note that the International Olympic Committee has a strict policy in place to prevent politics from entering the Games, which are meant to be a time of unity among nations in honor of sportsmanship.
