Health Department: Eleven Flu-related deaths reported in El Paso this season

Those with the Department of Health said, "We continue to send our deepest condolences to the families who have lost a loved one due to influenza".

Since Jan. 1, there have been 175 laboratory-confirmed flu cases in Lewis County, compared to 47 a year ago for the same period, between Jan. 1 and February 5.

The number of flu cases in DE continue to rise with health officials saying laboratory-confirmed cases hit 1,200 just this week-and they cautioned the week is far from over.

"After the governor signed the executive order allowing pharmacists to administer the flu vaccine to children, we've seen an increase in the number of families taking advantage of this initiative and it makes flawless sense to make this permanent", said State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker, M.D.

"That is a very hard one to enforce at all levels, but that is, I think, the number one way that we will decrease the spread in our community", Walters said.

And the worst is probably not over, she said. Welch says despite some claims to the contrary, getting the flu shot is still a great idea.

They also can visit the Flu Vaccine Finder at, run by the Centers for Disease Control.

While she did not have this week's numbers, Mrs. Martin said the number of cases surpassed last week's 162. That brings the total number of outbreaks in schools to 525 for the season.

Georgetown County saw a modest bump in its number of flu cases, as 505 people were diagnosed with the illness.
