Olympic Overnight Ratings Down a Tick from Sochi

In the past, Olympics coverage has fluctuated from year to year and is largely based on what country is hosting and the time zones.

For the week of February 5-11, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, NBC, 27.84 million; Winter Olympics (Sunday), NBC, 22.68 million; Winter Olympics (Saturday), NBC, 21.4 million; Winter Olympics (Thursday), NBC, 16 million; "NCIS", CBS, 13.9 million; "Bull", CBS, 10.9 million; "This Is Us", NBC, 10.14 million; "The Good Doctor", ABC, 9.64 million; NCIS: "New Orleans", CBS, 8.39 million; "Ellen's Game of Games", NBC, 7.7 million. "Only five years ago, we were still fourth place in total viewers after having regained the 18-49 demo crown in 2014, a level we've maintained for the past four full seasons". That was up 5 percent from the first Tuesday night in Sochi, which received a 14.5/22 and only aired on NBC broadcast.

Last night's NBC/NBCSN average of 23.9 million viewers dominated the competition - almost quadrupling the combined 6.1 million primetime viewers for ABC, CBS and FOX.

NBC Olympics' Total Audience Delivery measures broader consumption by calculating average minute viewing across broadcast, cable, and digital.

· NBCSN delivered its best-ever afternoon rating and viewership for Saturday's 2-5 p.m. ET telecast, featuring women's biathlon, mixed doubles curling, and long track speed skating. 1 rating, though the opening ceremony did not take place until February 9. Lazarus said the additional ad sales could bring in an additional few million dollars but won't take the total advertising for the winter games to $1 billion for NBC.

"This marks the first time NBC has ranked #1 in total viewers at any point during the season since it won the 2001-02 season - the first time that the network carried Winter Olympics with the highly rated Salt Lake City games, held on American soil", Deadline reports. Viewership includes the West Coast primetime encore.

NBC's 9.569 million viewers is the network's second highest average through 20 weeks of the season in 11 years, since 2006-07 (9.750 million), trailing slightly over that span only the 9.581 million average in 2014-15.
