Record-breaking German pair soar to stunning victory

In PyeongChang, she finally realized her Olympic dream of winning gold.

Aliona Savchenko collapsed to the ice in celebration after securing her first Olympic gold medal at the fifth time of asking. "We were on the ice for a medal, and for a gold medal, and we didn't give up after what happened yesterday". "I said I don't [Savchenko] to come back with another bronze medal".

Team gold medallists Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford of Canada took the bronze medal home with 230.15 points.

China's Sui and Han, who led after the short program, made mistakes on their opening lift, a combination jump and side-by-side triple salchows. It's the first-ever Olympic appearance for Bruno Massot.

Despite an unsynchronized side-by-side double Axel and Ryom's hand touch-landing after a throw triple loop in the long program, the DPRK pair refreshed their personal best with 193.63 points before a loud, adoring DPRK female cheer squad, to finish the 13th out of 16 pairs.

Their coach Bruno Marcotte had earlier told BBC that "Right now to be realistic, their goal is to make it into the top 12, if they reach the top ten, then that would incredible". But even that didn't satisfy them.

"Unfortunately, too many mistakes", Scimeca-Knierim said.

"I was quite nervous, this being my first Olympic Games", said Sui, already looking ahead to the next Winter Olympics.

They skated well, but the Germans were simply superb. "It was very good for us". "Everybody wants to be here, I hate to skate poorly enough that team in stands here feel like they could have done more than us".

The Ukrainian-born German skater previously competed at the 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014 games.

The European champions, competing under the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation flag, were second after the short programme, but errors in their free dance left a sour taste and they had to settle for fourth.

Still, their Olympics were made when they helped the US win team bronze. "I think his fatigue might have set in because he was concerned for me".

The U.S. isn't the only country suffering from a dwindling supply of talented pairs skaters. According to NBC Olympics, she has competed with three different partners in her various Olympic appearances. "We celebrated new year together and we said 2018 will be our year and it became our year". "We have worked a lot and hard but we were not able to skate better".

With that the 2018 Olympic pairs champions went off to celebrate.
