The CW Plans Six Nights of Originals

The CW Plans Six Nights of Originals

Of the five major broadcast networks, The CW has typically produced the lowest ratings.

We're very, very happy and very optimistic. We believe that this is the best thing for the CW and its business model. Adding Sunday night helps the network spread its entire lineup out a bit. But the night proved to be a tough field to compete in for the then-fledgling network, born from the combination of the WB and UPN. The CW's experiment to outsource Sunday night to MRC for the 2008-09 season failed miserably, with the network swiftly dropping the block for a lineup of Jericho reruns and MGM library movies until giving the the night back to the stations in spring of 2009.

Since that time, the television landscape has changed dramatically. "We value our relationship and look forward to an even stronger audience following with more of The CW's popular primetime programming". The CW will still stop airing original programming at the 9/8c hour. The current Netflix deals are set to expire in a year and a half.

Young TV fans have never known The CW to air shows on Sunday, but the night was actually a staple of the network over a decade ago.

"I think everyone is pleased", Pedowitz said.

Pedowitz said the network hasn't yet decided what will air there - but it's worth noting that for the final four seasons of its run, the original "Charmed" aired on Sundays at 8 p.m. on The WB. The CW is the last remanning broadcast network with a medical age in the adults 18-49 demo (45 in linear), with its digital/on-demand viewership in their 20s and 30s on average. It has found critical and commercial success with female-skewing dramedies such as "Jane the Virgin" and "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend"; superhero action dramas such as "Flash" and "Arrow"; and new series "Riverdale" and "Black Lightning". "It was really well received".

The expansion likely means a continuation of the network's tendency to renew the great majority of its series will continue.

The CW plans to air 15 original scripted shows this season.
