Mitt Romney officially announces that he's running for US Senate in Utah

Mitt Romney on Friday announced his long-expected Senate bid in his adopted state of Utah with a low-key rollout meant to duck roiling Republican divisions and avoid signaling that he will play the role of foil to President Donald Trump.

"I have chose to run for United States Senate because I believe I can help bring Utah's values and Utah's lessons to Washington", Romney said.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, who ran as Romney's running mate in 2012, released a supportive statement.

After his loss to President Obama, Romney settled into the role of Republican elder statesman and emerged as a leading Trump antagonist. Romney's great-great-grandfather Miles Romney was a Mormon pioneer, who settled in Utah in the 19th century and designed the famed St. George Tabernacle.

Perhaps mindful of a Romney resurgence, the president recently urged Mr Hatch, seen as a Trump loyalist, to run again for another six-year term.

The seat is now held by veteran politician Orrin Hatch, who is set to retire after more than 40 years.

"Utah needs an independent voice for our communities that are struggling, not a hand-picked candidate of the Washington establishment", said Wilson, a member of the Salt Lake County Council.

Vice, who worked in advertising and communications before deciding to take up a Senate campaign, said that, like Wilson, he understands Utahns better than Romney. Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud", Romney said, later adding, "He has neither the temperament nor the judgement to be president.

Anderson backtracked on those comments in a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon where he said Romney had reached out to him directly about his concerns, and had accepted his apology "without hesitation".

Former Romney campaign aides told The Hill Romney will not run a Never Trump-style campaign, though they said he won't shy away from criticizing the president when they disagree on something. He is one of the most famous Mormons and is widely respected in Utah, which is heavily Mormon and home to the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fellow NR commentator David French agrees, believing a Senator Romney "will disappoint all the right people".

Other Utah Republicans have encouraged Romney to run. Sen.

In the interim, Romney stepped in to turn around the scandal-plagued 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics, which vaulted his reputation in Utah.

"He's not running as a protest candidate against the president". How forceful will he push back if Trump says or does something outside the bounds of normal political and social discourse?

But Romney doesn't want to talk about any of that, because now, Romney wants to be the next senator from the Beehive State. Madden said, his first duty is to be a good ambassador for the people of Utah - not the face of the anti-Trump Republican Party.

What happened: Romney has made a decision to get back into politics, planning to launch his run for the Utah seat held by longtime Sen.

Mr Romney did not get the job.

During the 2016 campaign, Romney excoriated Trump by delivering a speech at the University of Utah.
