Miffed Arvinder Singh Lovely now returns to Congress fold

In less than a year after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following a rift with Delhi Congress Chief Ajay Maken, Arvinder Singh Lovely made a comeback, rejoining the Congress on Saturday.

Lovely, who was a former minister in the Sheila Dikshit-led government, met party chief Rahul Gandhi at his residence along with Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken earlier.

Maken said that Mr Lovely had left the party as there was some communication gap between the two. Speaking to media, Lovely said that the decision to leave the Congress was painful even for him since he found himself misfit with the BJP ideology. After meeting BJP president, Lovely stated that many Congress leaders now feel suffocated as the Congress party is not what it used to be. Journalist-turned-politician Pratyush Kanth, who had quit Congress to join BJP with Mr Lovely, is however unlikely to rejoin the party. Addressing the media at the AICC headquarters, Lovely said, "At that time, I had also said that it was not a happy decision for me".

Unperturbed over Mr Lovely rejoining Congress, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari told this newspaper that it was the former city minister's decision to join BJP. When fresh elections were held in 2015, the party was out for duck, unable to win a single seat in the 70-member assembly. "I did not say anything despite this and stayed on", Lovely had said. This development is surely going to benefit the Congress party ahead of the by-polls for the 20 assembly seats. Apart from Lovely, Delhi Youth Congress chief Amit Malik had also joined BJP.

"Mere liye koi khushi ka nirnay(leaving Congress, joining BJP) nahitha".
