The Slovaks, who stunned tournament favourites Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation in their opener, levelled 25 seconds later, when Tomas Surovy chipped a soft pass out of the corner to Andrej Kudrna, who tipped it between USA goalie Ryan Zapolski's pads.

All is not lost for the Americans as all 12 Olympic teams advance to the knockout round. Teams receive three points for regulation wins, two points for wins in overtime/shootout and one point for an overtime/shootout loss. Granato wondered if 21 players dressing in their first Olympic game combined with the hype and long day before a late start took a toll on his team, which hadn't played together much.

Bourque eventually passed back to Arcobello, who found Donato before the Harvard University player tucked forehand shot into the net for a 2-1 US lead.

Harvard's Ryan Donato, son of former NHL player Ted Donato, scored a pair of power play goals to spark the USA men's hockey team to a 2-1 win against Slovakia.

The United States men's hockey team needed a win in their second game of pool play of the 2018 Winter Olympics to earn an automatic bid into the quarterfinals.

Team USA lost 3-2 to Slovenia in overtime in its first game and now prepares for a crucial game against the team from Russian Federation.

For 40 minutes things went swimmingly for the star-less US men's hockey team in its Olympic opener against Slovenia.

Five practices were supposed to prepare the Americans for this, and they knew at the second intermission Slovenia was going to come out punching.

After a scoreless second period, Slovakia took advantage of sloppy play by from the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation in the third as Ceresnak collected the victor on a powerplay off a second delay of game penalty.

"They want to be over the boards and on the ice and in the action", Granato said.

"We're just concerned about getting shots and creating havoc around the net", Donato said. O'Neill said special teams are really important, but especially in this tournament, and goalie Ryan Zapolski said he has been impressed with what he has seen out of it so far. "So we got to be a little bit grittier in front of the net".

"The more we can settle in and not make a big deal out of the game, the better we'll do". "I think that speaks volumes to how close we are". "In a tournament like this, with how fast the college guys are, I think it's a big advantage for us".
