At least 4 killed in shooting attack in south Russian Federation

"An unknown man opened fire with a hunting rifle in Kizlyar, fatally wounding four women", the regional internal affairs ministry said in a statement.

The suspect was shot and killed by police who were responding to the scene, Fox News reported.

Fifth woman dies after succumbing to her injuries in Russian Federation church shooting; attacker shouted "Allahu Akbar!" as he opened fire.

Russian news agencies said the attack occurred as churchgoers celebrated Maslenitsa, a Christian holiday marking the last day before Lent according to the eastern Orthodox calendar. The local Interior Ministry, however, said the gunman had acted on his own, according to the Interfax news agency. "A bearded man ran towards the church shouting "Allahu Akbar" ('God is greatest') and killed four people", Father Pavel told RBK.

Dagestan is a predominantly Muslim region between Chechnya and the Caspian Sea. It was not immediately clear what motivated the shooting.

According to preliminary information, the injured persons include three National Guard officers.

Sunday's shooting comes exactly one month before the March 18 presidential election that Vladimir Putin is nearly guaranteed to win.
