Doctors successfully remove 'world's largest brain tumor'

But doctors at a Mumbai hospital successfully removed the huge mass following surgery which lasted for around seven hours.

Professor Trimurti Nadkarni who led the surgery said: 'Such large tumours are rare and are a surgical challenge. "After the investigation, we made a decision to perform the surgery [on February 14], which was extremely high-risk", said Dr Trimurti D Nadkarni, professor and head of neurosurgery, adding that such large tumours are rare and a surgical challenge.

The surgeons say it far outweighed the previous biggest brain tumour at 1.4kg (3.1lbs).

Pal's surgery took a little over six hours to complete and required the skilled hands of five surgeons, Nadkarni included. Examination revealed a tumour measuring 30 x 30 x 20 cm, shocking the living daylights out of the medical staff at the hospital, who had never seen such a large one before.

"The tumour weighed 1.873 kgs which is the largest weight of a brain tumor to be excised successfully in the world".

A shopkeeper from Uttar Pradesh said that Mr. Pal's tumour grew rapidly over the past one year. However, the tumor started growing out like mad over the past year.

"It appeared as if there are two heads mounted on top of each other".

Unfortunately, Pal's brain tumor left the man blind, but the doctors expect him to regain eyesight after the surgery.

Pal's wife, Manju, told the Hindu that the couple consulted several doctors in Uttar Pradesh but were told that the tumour was inoperable. "The part of the tumour within the skull was removed by making an opening in the skull". "Such cases are critical", the surgeon told the BBC.

Doctors said he should gradually regain his sight and health.

However, it is unsure whether Mr Pal's vision has been restored.

According to Nadkarni, 90 percent of the tumor was located between Pal's skull and his scalp; just 10 percent of the tumor grew within the skull.
