Spurs Expect Kawhi Leonard To Miss Remainder Of Season

Leonard has played in only nine game this season for San Antonio as he has struggled to get fully healthy from quadriceps tendinopathy.

Leonard has been medically cleared to return from the right quad tendinopathy injury, but since shutting down a nine-game return to the Spurs that ended January 13, he has elected against returning to the active roster, sources said. And if by some chance he is, it's going to be pretty late into the season and it's gonna be a tough decision how late you bring somebody back.

The #San Antonio Spurs are expected to challenge the Golden State Warriors this season, with #Kawhi Leonard leading the way.

"We've got to move on", Popovich told reporters Wednesday at the National Basketball Association team's practice. That's why I'm trying to be honest and logical.

The Spurs are 35-24 and now in third place in the Western Conference.

They come right out of the break with games against the red-hot Nuggets and the revamped Cavaliers, and they have two more games each against the Warriors, Rockets and Thunder - they play all three in a row in a mini road trip starting on March 8. The Spurs have 23 games left in the season and have their last regular-season game on April 11. "I'll be surprised if he gets back this year".

Popovich said there were no truths to the rumors and the Spurs are taking a cautious approach with Leonard as they would anyone else on the roster.

At the very least, Leonard is under contract through the 2019-20 season. He's a two-time first-team All-NBA and defensive player of the year, and won the NBA Finals MVP in the 2014 championship series against Miami.
