MotoGP: Tech3 To End 20-Year Relationship With Yamaha In 2019

Hervé Poncharal's Monster Energy Tech3 team have announced that they will split from Yamaha at the end of the 2018 MotoGP season, ending a 20-year collaboration. "Johann Zarco and Hafizh Syahrin will be fighting for top positions and without a doubt, Yamaha can count on us to be a loyal performant partner".

"I'm incredibly delighted after receiving the good news that I will ride with Monster Yamaha Tech3 in 2018", said Syahrin, who will become the first Malaysian rider to compete in the premier class.

Syahrin comes off the back of two strong years in Moto 2, the class he has competed in since 2012, scoring three podiums in that time with a best of second, the first coming in only his second ever Moto 2 Grand Prix at his home event in 2012 as he took third in sodden conditions. "I also referred to him for advice on how to get Hafizh in MotoGP next year and that is how all this started", said Razlan.

"I must thank Herve Poncharal for this opportunity, his faith and confidence in Hafizh".

"Hafizh had never been on a MotoGP bike before, was racing at an unfamiliar track (Buriram) and also carried the burden of expectations being the first Malaysian in MotoGP".

"We had to convince all the people around us that Hafizh is going to be a good MotoGP rider".

Final testing for the MotoGP teams happens in Qatar on March 1.

"It's been tough since we heard from Jonas Folger that unfortunately he decided not to race in 2018 in order to look after his health and fully recover".

The 23-year-old Malaysian signed a one-year contract as a replacement foe Jonas Folger, who on January announced that he would be taking a sabbatical from MotoGp after being diagnosed with Gilbert's syndrome last year. I would like to thank Razlan Razali for his passion, his contagious energy and the involvement he has for MotoGP racing and for the sport in general, plus to support Hafizh Syahrin to climb the last step to the premier class.

Various names have been linked to team Tech3 in recent weeks.

"I want to tell Hafizh: Welcome in our family!" Vinales had been seventh and Rossi ninth at the previous three-day test in Malaysia.

Zarco - who claimed three podiums, two poles, sixth in the world championship a year ago - has been linked with KTM since Valencia in November, where he came within 0.337s of what would have been Tech3's first MotoGP victory. You can learn from the team, from Johann.

"In just a short time, I really learned to fully control a MotoGP bike, which is still unbelievable for me".
