Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Ireland beat India to clinch 3-2 win

Ireland beat India 3-2 in the final round robin game of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey at Ipoh, Malaysia today.

India had an outside chance of qualifying for the gold medal match but they squandered the lead twice to go down to Ireland in the final group game on Friday. It was goals by Varun Kumar (5', 32'), Shilanand Lakra (28') and Gurjant Singh (37') that ensured India finished with a win.

India's tactics were spot on from the starting whistle and they earned back-to-back penalty corners in the fifth minute.

Juan Martín López (1st) and Gonzalo Peillat (11th) gave the 2016 Olympic champions 2-0 lead.

One such attempt saw Nilam Sanjeep Xess's fierce pass from right side of the circle to find forward Shilanand Lakra poised in front of the goal.

The Irish dominated with the ball possession while their goalkeeper Jamie Carr came up with some brilliant saves to keep India under pressure. It was midfielder Sumit who was in the middle of all the action, trying to make a baseline entry into the circle when the Irish defender was caught making an infringement.

Ireland claimed a shock victory over India in the Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia to claim their first victory of the tournament. As the match came to a close, India upped the ante, taking off their goalie and played with 11 outfield players. Ireland lost their previous four matches.

Bobby Crutchley's team then enjoyed a prolonged spell of possession as they tried to force an equaliser and it nearly came in the 44th minute as Chris Griffiths did well to control a terrific Mark Gleghorne pass, but his bullet strike rippled the netting on the wrong side of the post. Ireland didn't rest on their laurels and looked good to score another goal.

Govers' thundering drag flick went unanswered and a confident Australia made further inroads and went 2-0 up with Lachlan Sharp firing in the rebound from a 53rd-minute penalty corner.
