Arizona Cardinals to release Palestine native Adrian Peterson

Adrian Peterson appears to be headed back to the open market.

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to release running back Adrian Peterson on Monday, avoiding a salary cap hit of almost $3 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

If he's still on the roster by Friday, he will be due a bonus of $750,000.

He had games of 134 and 159 yards with the Cardinals but otherwise totaled 155 yards in the four other games before suffering a season-ending neck injury in Week 12.

Schefter reports that there is a chance he could return to the Cardinals.

Before joining the Cardinals, Peterson played four games with the Saints. It is also reported that Peterson can re-sign with the team later on.

The 2012 NFL MVP sits second among active rushers in yards and attempts, behind Frank Gore.

For his career, Peterson ranks 12th on the all-time list with 12,276 rushing yards, three behind Marshall Faulk and 36 shy of Jim Brown at No. 10.
