JK minister Haseeb Drabu sacked after saying Kashmir 'not political' issue

A day after PDP MLC Surinder Choudhary tendered his resignation over demand of appointment of ADC for Sunderbani Constituency, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday removed Finance Minister Dr Haseeb Drabu from her cabinet for his remarks on Kashmir.

"Jammu and Kashmir shouldn't be seen as a conflict state or a political problem, but as a society with social issues", Drabu had said at an event in New Delhi on Friday.

Madni said, "The party recognises Jammu and Kashmir as a political issue and ever since its emergence the party has relentlessly been pursuing its resolution through reconciliation and dialogue, both at internal and external levels".

After news of the minister's sacking broke, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said it would be "interesting to see who replaces him in the Finance Ministry". The minister's statement had drawn criticism from the political fraternity of the state. He also asked Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti: "What message are you trying to convey when the situation is so tense in the Valley?"

"PDP, since its inception, has considered Kashmir issue as political".

The PDP leader said there was a dire need to include "concerns" of the people of the state and not to get lost in the "forest of symbols".

"Our party's stand has always been that Kashmir is a political issue and needs a political solution", the minister added.

He said throughout the chequered history of past decades it has not been just a territorial dispute but a test of the secular, democratic and federal nature of the republic.

Drabu concluded the speech saying, "Don't see Kashmir as a conflict state; it is not".
