Karti sent to Tihar till March 24, denied separate cell, books

Karti was arrested on February 28 at the Chennai airport on his return from the United Kingdom, in connection with the FIR lodged on May 15 previous year alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of about Rs 305 crore in 2007 when his father was the Union finance minister. Karti's plea was that since his father dealt with various stringent penal laws like TADA, MCOCA, UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) and NDPS (Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Acts and many of these prisoners are facing prosecution under the same laws, he may face a threat from them.

The 1995 death of biscuit baron Rajan Pillai was also cited, as Karti Chidambaram said he did not want to be exposed to attacks. Meanwhile, Karti's counsel asked the court to hear his bail plea too, which was listed for March 15.

However, the court directed the lock-up in-charge and jail superintendent of Tihar Jail to provide and ensure proper safety and security to accused during the judicial custody as per rules.

Special CBI judge Sunil Rana said the social status of the accused can not be the basis for a separate prison.

Countering the CBI plea for sending him to 15 days' judicial custody, Karti's lawyer Dayan Krishnan moved three applications to consider bail application, special cell with attached bathroom and allowing books, own clothes, medicines, home food and spectacles. The counsel also sought a separate cell in case Karti was sent to judicial custody. The CBI in the court said, "During the entire period of police custody remand, Karti Chidambaram was evasive and non-cooperative".

The editor had posed a question as to whether Justice Muralidhar, who was part of the bench which had passed the order granting protection to Karti Chidambaram, was a junior of former UPA minister and senior advocate P Chidambaram.

"CBI opposing a separate prison, gives me further apprehension and shows political motive and enhances my threat perception". We are outraged with the CBI stand on Karti's plea. "He be produced on March 24", the special judge said.

The former finance minister's son is being investigated by the CBI for laundering money he received as payoffs to facilitate investment approval in INX Media when his father was the country's finance minister.
