Case Keenum on his way out of Minnesota, to sign with Denver

Kirk Cousins, who spent his first six National Football League seasons with the Washington Redskins, is the top free-agent quarterback available (not counting Drew Brees, who is expected to remain in New Orleans). And while the Vikings line improved in 2017, it still needs another round of resources this spring.

The six-year veteran picked the ideal time for a career year before cashing in during free agency.

Elway had said early in the offseason "for us to have a chance to get better we have to get better at that position".

The Broncos rotated quarterbacks in 2017 with Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch all taking turns as the starter.

Keenum is now 30 years old, and was a mediocre-to-bad quarterback for his entire career, until last season.

With both Bradford and Bridgewater out, unheralded backup Case Keenum stepped up to start at quarterback and led the Vikings all the way to the NFC Championship Game. The Broncos also hold the No. 5 pick in the upcoming National Football League draft, and now have the flexibility to trade down with a team desperate for a quarterback (see: Bills) or can still decide to take a young arm to groom for the future. The Broncos reportedly attempted to trade for Keenum two years ago after Peyton Manning retired and while Kubiak was still Denver's head coach. Keenum was great for the Vikings last season, but he had his "what are you doing?" moments and I don't know if a fanbase can be completely comfortable with Keenum, who was very average in his first four seasons in the NFL.

The Broncos haven't made the playoffs since their Super Bowl win to close out the 2015 season. In 15 games last season, the quarterback completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 3,547 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions.

Or as Elway put it at the scouting combine: "I didn't say it". He played for Vance Joseph and Gary Kubiak in Houston at the beginning of his career (2012-13) and already has a feel for the staff and offensive system. "Obviously we have to get better there, whoever is going to be the quarterback". That doesn't all go on the players. "Is it because he had a good team around him?"
