Chiefs to sign WR Sammy Watkins to three-year deal

Chiefs to sign WR Sammy Watkins to three-year deal

After being selected fourth overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2014 NFL Draft, Watkins hasn't quite lived up to the hype as he has dealt with several injuries throughout his first four years. Watkins recorded 39 catches for 593 yards and eight touchdowns in what turned out to be his lone season in Los Angeles.

Watkins is expected to sign a three-year deal worth $48 million total with $30 million guaranteed at signing, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported.

Sammy Watkins scores eight touchdowns for the Rams last season. Should Watkins come to town, they might be able to hold off and use that pick on someone such as linebacker Tremaine Edmunds instead.

The signing can not be made official until free agency opens at 9pm (GMT) on Wednesday.

So the Rams knew Watkins would be exposed to free agency, and likely lured away with big money based on his potential.

However, Watkins is an elite talent and is just 24 years old. That's unfortunate, and not the way they planned it, although the Rams likely will receive a compensatory third-round draft pick in 2019 for the loss of Watkins to free agency.

The Chiefs are making their first free agent splash.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, now are one of the more potentially explosive offenses in the league with Watkins, Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunt and Travis Kelce at the disposal of second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
